Preparing For Your Surgery

Welcome to Surgical Specialty Hospital of Arizona, (SSHAZ).  Our staff at SSHAZ are well-trained and dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to our patients and their families.

We want the experience of the patients and their families to be as pleasant as possible so you will continue to choose SSHAZ as your # 1 Surgical Hospital.  The information below will guide you to an understanding of what we need from you to facilitate a positive experience, and what you may expect of us.

Pre-admission:

The hospital pre-admission staff will contact you by phone approximately 7-10 days prior to your scheduled admission with specific instructions on labs and/or tests necessary prior to your surgery.   We will also contact you the day before surgery to confirm your time of arrival to the hospital. Patients may call 602-795-6020 with any questions regarding your hospital stay, changes in condition, or any questions you may have.

  • DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN, IBUPROFEN, MOTRIN, OR OTHER ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MEDICATION,  INCLUDING NSAIDS TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO DATE OF SURGERY, unless otherwise instructed by your physician.   Such drugs may cause bleeding during and after surgery.  You may take Tylenol as needed for pain, use as directed.
  • Daily Medications: Ask your primary physician whether you should take any medications the night before the surgery or the day of surgery, otherwise you should be nothing by mouth, NPO, after Midnight.
  • Call your surgeon or call SSHAZ at 602-795-6020 if you should develop a cold, fever, or respiratory infection before your surgery for further instructions and possible rescheduling of your surgery.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco of any kind as these substances reduce circulation to the skin and impede healing.
  • If you have an Advanced Directive, Living Will, or Health Proxy form, please bring the original form with you to the hospital.  If you do not have any of these legal forms, but would like information you may inquire upon admission.
  • Please bring your insurance card and a form of ID with you the day of surgery.
  • Please bring your medications in with you to your Pre-Admissions visit so the nurse can verify all the medications you are taking.

Valuables:

It is recommended that all valuables, jewelry, cell phones, lap-tops, games, credit cards, and money, etc. not be brought into the hospital.

Visitors:

SSHAZ has an open visitation policy at the nurse's discretion depending on patient condition.  All patient rooms are private and accommodations can be made for a family member to spend the night if needed.

Visitors can enjoy our cafeteria during the daytime hours, and we have a comfortable waiting room for family members to relax during your surgery.

Hospital Discharge:

Patients are discharged home when the physician feels you are medically stable.  You will receive discharge information and instructions, both written and verbal, specific to your surgical procedure.  For your safety, you must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home following your surgery. Patients may not drive after surgery nor take a taxi home. Either a family member or friend must remain with you the first night after surgery due to sedation. You will also receive a post-operative phone call from a representative to ask about your experience while at the hospital.
